Notional widths

For non cold-formed sections the notional width used for the calculation of the effective shape is specified in EN 1993-1-5 art.4.4(2).

For cold-formed sections the notional widths are specified in EN 1993-1-3 art. 5.1 and Figure 5.1.

The initial shape elements are taken between the roundings (i.e. internal dimensions w).

The notional widths b_p are then calculated as follows:

• For an internal element (I)

b_p = w + r_m * sin ( φ_left / 2) + r_m * sin ( φ_right / 2) 

• For an outstand element (UO, SO)

b_p = w + r_m * sin ( φ / 2)

In addition to the notional with b_p, for each element the centerline length l_c  is determined as follows:

• For an internal element (I)

l_c = b_p + g_r,left + g_r,right

With

g_r,left = r_m * [tan ( φ_left / 2) - sin ( φ_left / 2)]

g_r,right = r_m * [tan ( φ_right / 2) - sin ( φ_right / 2) ]

• For an outstand element (UO, SO)

l_c = b_p + g_r

With

g_r = r_m * [tan ( φ / 2) - sin ( φ / 2)]
