Stiffener settings

Web stiffeners are used to prevent shear buckling, which can be a design failure mode for high and slender (thin webs) profiles.

Name

Defines the name of the stiffener (set of stiffeners).

Stiffener

Material

Specifies the material used for the stiffener.

Thickness

Determines the thickness of the stiffener.

Decrease

The actual size of the stiffener can be reduced by a specified value (a millimetre or so) from each side of the stiffener to make the stiffener smoothly fit between the flanges.

Geometry

Position x

Specifies the position in X (longitudinal) direction.

Co-ordinate definition

Defines the co-ordinate system in which the position x is inputted.

Repeat

Tells how many times the stiffener is repeated.

Regularly

Tells that stiffeners are positioned regularly with the same distance between two adjacent stiffeners.

Delta x

Defines the distance between individual stiffeners.

This item is available only if Repeat is greater than one.

On begin

Specifies whether the first stiffener should be applied.

On end

Specifies whether the last stiffener should be applied.

Note: Stiffeners are available for the following codes: EC-ENV, EC-EN, DIN, ONORM, NEN, AISC ASD, AISC LRFD, CM66, BS 1990, SIA 263, IS. They are not available for CSN, STN, BS2000.

The procedure to adjust the stiffeners
  1. Open service Steel:

  1. either using tree menu function Steel,

  2. or using menu function Tree > Steel.

  1. Select function Beams >Stability Check Data > Stiffeners and open it.

  2. Type required values and select appropriate options.

  3. Confirm with [OK].

  4. Select the member where the data are to be defined.

  5. End the function.
