Validation of modal analysis: protocol

Dynamic analysis troubleshootingmodal analysis > protocol

This section presents points that can be checked after a simple modal analysis of a structure. However, as any dynamic analysis in SCIA Engineer starts with a modal analysis, this should be considered as a basic check list, to be used systematically for any type of dynamic analysis.

Dynamic analysis in SCIA Engineer requires the definition of masses (mass group and mass combination). Having done that, a modal analysis of the structure may be carried out without any additional input. It is recommended to run a modal analysis of the structure and validate the model before proceeding further with the input of dynamic loading on the structure.

Check the calculation protocol

After a modal analysis, the first element to check is the calculation protocol of eigen frequencies.

That protocol contains a lot of useful information for the validation of the model.

Several aspects can be checked, purely by looking at the results provided in the calculation protocol:

  1. Sum of masses
  2. Frequencies / Periods
  3. Relative modal massess

Next step: check sum of masses
