Composite column design setup - EC-EN

This chapter provides full explanation of individual parameters from the composite column design section of the Composite Setup dialogue.

Buckling defaults

Buckling length factors

ky

 

Description

Setting to select the buckling length factor determination (Calculate, Factor, Length) for flexural buckling around the y-y axis.

 

Application

It is used for obtaining the critical Euler load Ncr which is then used in the compression check.

kz

 

Description

Setting to select the buckling length factor determination (Calculate, Factor, Length) for flexural buckling around the z-z axis.

 

Application

It is used for obtaining the critical Euler load Ncr which is then used in the compression check.

Default sway types

Sway around y-y axis

 

Description

When activated it indicates that the members are prone to sway around the y-y axis.

 

Application

This setting is used in the calculation of the buckling factor ky if in the buckling setting of the member(s): ky = calculate and sway y-y = from setup.

Sway around z-z axis

 

Description

When activated it indicates that the members are prone to sway around the z-z axis.

 

Application

This setting is used in the calculation of the buckling factor kz if in the buckling setting of the member(s): kz = calculate and sway z-z = from setup.

Buckling length ratios ky, kz

Max. k ratio

 

Description

Limit for the buckling ratios for flexural buckling.

 

Application

Value which serves as a limit for the calculated buckling ratios. The buckling ratios are 'capped' at this value.

Max. slenderness

 

Description

Maximum slenderness limit of the composite column.

 

Application

If the maximum slenderness limit is surpassed a warning is shown in the output.

2nd order buckling ratios

 

Description

Setting for buckling ratios in case of 2nd order analysis.

 

Application

In case of 2nd order analysis this setting is used to determine the buckling ratios:

  • Same as linear calculation: the buckling ratios are the same as for a linear analysis.

  • Calculated using non-sway settings: Calculated buckling ratios are recalculated using the non-sway setting.

Member imperfection in 2nd order analysis

Bow imperfection e0,y

 

Description

Setting to define local bow imperfections on the member.

 

Application

Local bow imperfections are used in the context of 2nd order analysis.

  • No bow imperfections: No bow imperfections are applied to members that have buckling groups that use the "From setup" bow imperfection setting.

  • EN 1994-1-1 Table 6.5: Bow imperfections are applied according to table 6.5 of EN 1994-1-1 for the members that use the "From setup" bow imperfection setting.

  • Manual input of bow imperfection: The user inputs the bow imperfection directly and it is applied to members that have buckling groups that use the "From setup" bow imperfection setting.

Bow imperfection e0,z

 

Description

Setting to define local bow imperfections on the member.

 

Application

Local bow imperfections are used in the context of 2nd order analysis.

  • No bow imperfections: No bow imperfections are applied to members that have buckling groups that use the "From setup" bow imperfection setting.

  • EN 1994-1-1 Table 6.5: Bow imperfections are applied according to table 6.5 of EN 1994-1-1 for the members that use the "From setup" bow imperfection setting.

  • Manual input of bow imperfection: The user inputs the bow imperfection directly and it is applied to members that have buckling groups that use the "From setup" bow imperfection setting.

Creep coefficient

 

Description

The creep coefficient phi_t takes the creep effects into account.

 

Application

It is used in determining the Ec,eff (E-modulus of the concrete section for long term effects).

Shear connectors

Type

 

Description

Describes the default shear connector data properties.

 

Application

These shear connector properties are taken into account during the longitudinal shear check.

Connectors per row

 

Description

Number of shear connectors per row.

 

Application

These shear connector properties are taken into account during the longitudinal shear check.

Longitudinal spacing of connectors

 

Description

Longitudinal distance between rows of shear connectors.

 

Application

These shear connector properties are taken into account during the longitudinal shear check.

Friction coefficient

 

Description

Steel flange and reinforced concrete interface friction coefficient.

 

Application

These shear connector properties are taken into account during the longitudinal shear check.

Reinforcement design

Minimum cover

Design work life

 

Description

The design working life of the structure.

 

Application

It is used for determining the minimal concrete cover.

Exposure class

 

Description

The exposure class related to environmental conditions.

 

Application

Depending on the exposure class the minimal concrete cover can be determined by means of table 4.4N (EN 1992-1-1).

Abrasion class

 

Description

Additional exposure class in case of an abrasion attack.

 

Application

Depending on the abrasion class the minimal concrete cover is increased (sacrificial layer).

Type of concrete

 

Description

The production type of concrete.

 

Application

To take into account additional deviation to nominal concrete cover depending on the type of concrete.

Special concrete quality control

 

Description

The usage of special concrete quality control during the concrete production.

 

Application

To take into account additional deviation to nominal concrete cover depending on the presence of special concrete quality control.

Design defaults

Concrete cover

 

Description

The method for determining the minimal concrete cover.

 

Application

The method for the minimal concrete cover as described in EN 1992-1-1 or a user defined value can be used instead.

Main reinforcement diameter

 

Description

The diameter of the main reinforcement (longitudinal).

 

Application

This value is used as the main reinforcement diameter (longitudinal) as design default.

Stirrup diameter

 

Description

The diameter of the stirrup.

 

Application

This value is used for the stirrup diameter as design default.

Detailing provisions

Do not allow overlapping of stirrups

 

Description

When activated it prevents overlapping of stirrups.

 

Application

When activated overlapping of stirrups is prevented during the input of reinforcement.

Minimum length for stirrup reinforcements

 

Description

Sets a minimum length for the stirrup reinforcement.

 

Application

This minimum stirrup length is applied during the input of reinforcement.

Minimum length for longitudinal reinforcements

 

Description

Sets a minimum length for the longitudinal reinforcement.

 

Application

This minimum longitudinal length is applied during the input of reinforcement.

Max. number of stirrup bending

 

Description

Sets an upper limit for the maximum number of bends on a stirrup.

 

Application

This limit value is taken into account during the input of reinforcement.

Edge with support

 

Description

Detailing provision for an edge with support (half of stirrup distance, half of stirrup diameter, by user).

 

Application

This definition is taken into account during the input of reinforcement.

User value for edge with support

 

Description

User input value for the detailing provision in case of an edge with support.

 

Application

This user value is taken into account during the input of reinforcement.

Edge without support

 

Description

Detailing provision for an edge witouth support (half of stirrup distance, half of stirrup diameter, by user).

 

Application

This definition is taken into account during the input of reinforcement.
