How to use additional plates
Soilin is a tool which calculates C parameters of the subsoil under the surface support. Using the additional plates around the support provides more realistic results.
About C parameters:
- C parameters are parameters of interaction, so their value depends on the structure, load, stiffness and subsoil. Change in any of those parts causes different C parameters.
- The whole plate is supported vertically by the soil stiffness – parameter C1 (winkler) and also in the shear direction – parameter C2 (pasternak).
- The plate edges are more supported by the C2 parameters because it is affected by neglecting.
- The area around the support is affected by the shear stiffness of the soil and the degrease basin is created.
- The degrease basin can be substituted by spring supports around the plate – this is done automatically in SCIA Engineer when user don’t add plates around.
- When user uses the plates around the support, the springs are not added and the C parameters are calculated for the whole area.

Settings for soilin calculation
- The functionality Soil interaction must be enabled.
- This linear combination must be selected in Solver setup for Solin.
- The project must contain borehole with geologic profile.
- The project must contain surface support type soilin.
How to calculate the plate without soilin
- Open the project “soilin_start.esa”.
- There is one plate with the surface support type Individual. This type of the support has a constant parameters C1 and C2.
- Run the linear calculation with the default settings.
- Go to the Results - there are no results for C parameters (it is shaded).
- Internal forces - for example vy:
How to calculate the plate with soilin.
- Change the support type to "Soilin".
- Run the linear calculation again.
- Go to the Results - 2D internal forces - vy:

- Subsoil model results - "Soil Stress Diagram" - there is a stress diagram for the selected mesh element:
- Close the dialogue.
- Use ESC to finish the action.
The edges of the plate are supported by springs automatically.
How to create the additional plates around
- Use the same project.
- Open the Structure service and start the command for inserting a new plate.
- Set the thickness of the plate to 1mm.
- Create 4 plates around the surface support according to the picture. The width from the original plate is 3m.
- Add the surface support type soilin on those plates.
- Run the linear calculation with the same settings again.
- Go to the Results for Soilin.
- Subsoil stiffness parameters - parameter C1z:

- Close the dialogue.
- Use ESC to finish the action.
- The interesting results are deformations.
