Introduction

In this benchmark determine the available torsional strength of an ASTM A500, Grade C, HSS6x4x1/4.

Reference results

The material properties are as follows:

ASTM A500 Grade C
Fy = 50 ksi
Fu = 62 ksi
E = 29000 ksi

Geometric properties are as follows:

t = 0.233 in.

b/t = 14.2

h/t = 22.8

C = 10.1 in³

The available torsional strength for rectangular HSS is stipulated in AISC Specification Section H3.1. The critical stress, Fcr, is determined from AISC Specification Section H3.1(b).

Because h/t > b/t, h/t governs.

Therefore use AISC specification equation H3-3 to determine Fcr:
